The department of chemistry offers undergraduate as well as post graduate course (Organic Chemistry). The department has well equipped labs for inorganic, organic and physical chemistry separately with sufficient instruments. The department has efficient faculty who encourages students interests in learning chemistry by using latest teaching aids.
The Department of Chemistry was established in 1944 with physical and biological sciences at Intermediate level and Chemistry, Botany, Zoology (CBZ) and Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics (MPC) at undergraduate level with courses Chemistry as main subject and other subjects as ancillaries. Later in 1998 due to the demand for diversified courses and scientific development in the society with the onslaught of Genetic engineering, Cloning, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology importance in the sciences at undergraduate level and for the purpose of need, then the Commissioner of our Collegiate Education sanctioned new restructured courses at under graduate level especially to the girl students who have completed Intermediate with BiPC group. So the new courses with the above subjects in combination with Chemistry as one of the subject started B.Sc., degree courses like (MZC,MBC, BIOTECH CB, BIOCHEMISTRYCHE, BOT, Bioche ZooChe,,Biotec Bioche Chemistry ) was started in the year 1998 – 2002 for girl students. In addition to these courses at undergraduate level the Department has started M.Sc., Organic Chemistry specialization with 30 intakes from the academic year 2011-12 for girl students, only Govt. College in the entire district. The college/department has attained autonomous status in the academic year 2014-15.
The Department has reputed, with well qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty members whose contribution has been rendered in teaching, book- writing and research activities, besides motivating the students for their academic excellence. The Department is equipped with well established laboratories, equipment like U.V- visible spectrophotometer, Triple distillation unit, Elico spectrophotometer, Conductmetric bridges, Potentiometers, Colorimeters etc., for doing practicals of under graduate, postgraduate(M.Sc., Organic Chemistry) and also for carrying out research work. . The faculty did extension activities like formation of WATER CLUB with some students informing the public the importance of water, water conservation, and prevention of water pollution in their surroundings. Previously we celebrating every year last Saturday of March as World’s Earth Hour in order to reduce carbon causing pollution in the form of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
The students are achieving excellent result in university examinations and semester end examination result. Dr. K. Bhagya Lakshmi got her doctoral degree in the year 2012 from the Dept. of Chemistry, Acharya Nagarjuna University under FDP program. Dr. Rafiya Sultana got her Ph.D degree from University of Hyderabad in the year 2016. Dr. S. Mutta Reddy recognized as research Guide from the Dept. of Chemistry, Acharya Nagarjuna University in the year 2010. Dr.T.Raja Rajeswari in the year 2012 and Dr. K.Bhagya Lakshmi in the year 2015 are recognized as research guides from the Dept. Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur.
