The department of Homescience has been established in the year 1968. The department has four lecturers out of them two members are permanent lecturers and two members are guest faculty. The allotted student strength of the department has been increased from 21 to 30 in the academic year 2017-18. All the 30 seats were filled. With regard to curriculum the syllabus of first year is modified with minor changes of some additional inputs and the number of units for all the courses are 5. Internal assessment for first year students is changed from 30 to 40 marks. Out of 40 twenty marks are for internal assessment (written exam), five marks for attendance and five marks for various co curricular activities like assignment, seminar, preparation of a-v aids and remaining 10 marks are for written exam in objective mode.

Food, shelter and clothing are fundamental for human survival. Studying in depth about these basic human needs for qualitative life is the ultimate objective of Home Science education. It conceptualizes the student’s knowledge and skill right from where the human life starts, how it grows, develops and expands with physical, physiological, psychological, social and economic dimensions through different courses.
Department of Home Science, one of the faculties of Government Degree College for Women (A) is unique with its mission to enhance the standard of individuals in general and rural families in particular through teaching, research and extension activities. The main focus is on empowerment of woman and girl child in rural and urban households through self employment which would help them to become better resource managers and contribute towards development.
