The department was established in 1944.
The department offered M.A (Telugu) from 2005. A veryLarge number of students passed in Distinction. Good number of students got Prathibha Awards for their excellence in studies
Many eminent scholars, authors, poets and critics served as head of the department.
After accreditation department offered some certificate courses like Journalism, Spoken Kannada and Literature-Alankaaraas, which are very useful to students to enrich in knowledge and employment.
Department conducted three workshops. First one is about Dialetcts, second one is about job opportunities for Telugu studying students and third one is about Alankaras.These workshops are also very useful to students both in knowledge and employability
During 2013-14, 2014-15 academic years, Telugu students won Best Study Project awards in state level competitions. (Yuva Tharangam-2014 and Yuva Tharangam-2015).

The institution got autonomous status from 2014 onwards. So the institution has introduced innovative changes in the curriculum under Choice Based Credit System with the motive of preparing the students to cope with the competitive world. So the department also adopted the changes. Following the guidelines of UGC, APSCHE and Acharya Nagarjuna University, department modified curriculum
Department organized Avadhaanam, Literary Forum on “ Aadhunika Katha Vikaasam”,State level student seminar on “Writers and their Social Responsibility”and District level Language quize progromme. These are all student centered programs and very useful to them in to enrich knowledge and creative thinking.

Department of Telugu aims at the development of communicative skills, employability skills and also the development of good character, moral values and social responsibility among the students.
Implementing student centric methods like seminars, workshops, group discussions, assignments, study projects and quiz etc we enable the students to improve communicative skills and employability skills.
By offering different classics from ancient and modern literature, we enable the students to develop good character and moral values.
By adding different essays and short stories which reflect socio, economic and political issues, we enable the students to understand literature reflects society and society influences literature as well.
